My Yellow Daffodil of the Winter
My yellow daffodil of the winter
Such a relief to see you inside the store
Such a contrast to the naked trees outside
Suffering in silence
The terror of snow and ice.
I wonder about your journey
Across continents for days
Crossing the boarder
Leaving the familiar landscape and faces
That nurtured you.
You were so lucky
To cross the border
Without the regular welcome protocols
Without the fingerprints
And visa papers.
You did not have to sneak in to El Norte
Like so many despised
But exploited colored people
Who barely make a living
Even though giving best of them
Toiling in snow blizzard outside
While their folks at home
Tend you and send you here
My beautiful daffodil of the winter.
