I wonder what we are
I wonder
When Darwin touted the ideas of
Survival of the fittest
Struggle for existence
What he could vividly see
In all phases of evolution
Was he looking at the mirror instead?
And data mining?
Finding what he wanted to find.
It sounds so strange to me
Human beings
Are not humane beings
Billions are spent to make
The killing more efficient
More lethal, more massive
Shock and awe
Wow!
As if it is another action movie
Forget what Jesus said
About loving our neighbors
In the name of God, the magnificent
The compassionate One,
Who apparently resides in living and nonliving
Let us demonize our own kind
Scared by the color of the skin
By the turban on the head
Or by just the perceptions of -isms
We carpet bomb or become suicide bomber
We pulverize the kids, women and old folks
As if the destiny of mankind
Is self-immolation.
We are in a world of strangers
Imprisoned by paranoia and fear
A strange sense of aloofness
Pervades us
We become the killer of our own kind
What drives a man to do that?
I never know
Except the famous saying
Man goes to war
Because he secretely wishes to die.
